How to Measure Your Dog's Neck

Getting the right bandana size starts with an accurate neck measurement. Here's the method professional groomers and veterinarians use:

  1. 1
Use a soft tape measure. A fabric measuring tape works best. No tape measure? Use a piece of string or a shoelace — you can measure it with a ruler afterward.
  2. 2
Find the collar position. Wrap the tape around the middle of your dog's neck — right where the collar usually sits. Not up near the jaw and not down at the shoulder base.
  3. 3
Keep two fingers under the tape. Slide two fingers between the measuring tape and your dog's neck. This ensures the measurement includes breathing room. A bandana should never be tight.
  4. 4
Read in inches. Note the measurement where the tape overlaps. This is your dog's neck size. Round up to the nearest half inch if you're between marks.

Pro tip: Measure when your dog is standing and relaxed — not while they're excited, lying down, or pulling. Neck size can differ by up to an inch depending on posture.

Dog Bandana Size Chart

This chart shows general size ranges. Thread N' Wags bandanas list specific neck ranges (for example, 14"-18") because each piece is individually made. Use the chart below to get a general idea, then check the specific range on each bandana listing.

Breed sizes vary between individuals. Always measure your specific dog rather than relying on breed averages alone. Giant breeds (Great Dane, Saint Bernard) may exceed our standard XL range — contact us for custom sizing.

Bandana Size by Breed

While measuring is always best, here is a general guide for common breeds. Keep in mind that individual dogs vary — a muscular French Bulldog may need a medium, while a petite one fits a small. Mixed breeds can fall anywhere on the spectrum.

How Should a Dog Bandana Fit?

A well-fitted bandana sits comfortably over the collar and hangs at chest level. The point of the bandana should reach roughly to the top of the front legs — not dragging on the ground and not bunched up under the chin. Here is what to look for:

Good Fit

  • Two fingers fit between bandana and neck
  • Bandana hangs at chest level
  • Slides over collar without bunching
  • Dog moves freely without catching
  • Stays put during normal activity

Too Small

  • Bandana bunches or folds around collar
  • Elastic rides up toward the jaw
  • Fabric stretches tight instead of draping
  • Dog scratches or paws at it

Too Large

  • Bandana slides down to the shoulders
  • Point drags or touches the ground
  • Rotates freely around the collar
  • Gets caught under front legs during walks

The Thread N' Wags Attachment System

All Thread N' Wags bandanas and bow ties are hand-sewn with built-in elastic that slides directly over your dog's existing collar. No tying, no snaps, no velcro. The elastic is sewn in matching fabric as part of the bandana's construction — it is a single cohesive piece, not a separate add-on.

This system has three advantages over tie-on bandanas:

  • Secure fit: The elastic grips the collar and stays in place during walks, play, and photo shoots. No retying.
  • Comfortable: The sewn-in elastic distributes pressure evenly. It does not constrict or press on the neck like a knotted bandana can.
  • Universal: Works with flat collars, rolled collars, and martingale collars. The elastic stretches to accommodate different collar widths.

Because the elastic provides adjustability within a range, Thread N' Wags bandanas fit a span of neck sizes (for example, 16"-18") rather than a single fixed size. Your measurement just needs to fall within the listed range.

How to Put a Bandana on a Dog

The method depends on the bandana style. Here are the two most common approaches:

Over-the-Collar Bandana (Sewn-In Elastic)

  1. 1. Remove your dog's collar.
  2. 2. Slide the elastic over one end of the collar.
  3. 3. Push the bandana to the center of the collar.
  4. 4. Buckle the collar on your dog as usual.
  5. 5. Adjust so the bandana point hangs at chest level.

No tying needed. Stays put all day.

How to Tie a Bandana on a Dog (Traditional)

  1. 1. Fold the square fabric diagonally into a triangle.
  2. 2. Drape the folded edge across the back of your dog's neck, point facing down.
  3. 3. Bring both ends to the front or side.
  4. 4. Tie a flat knot — keep it loose enough to fit two fingers underneath.
  5. 5. Tuck the knot ends or let them hang.

May loosen during play. Needs retying.

Thread N' Wags bandanas use the elastic over-the-collar method. The elastic is covered in matching fabric so it blends with the design — no visible rubber band. Once it is on the collar, you never need to retie or readjust.

Tips for First-Time Bandana Owners

Start with short sessions

If your dog has never worn a bandana, put it on for 15-20 minutes at first. Most dogs forget about it quickly, but some need a few tries to get comfortable. Pair the bandana with treats and praise.

Remove during unsupervised time

Bandanas are accessories, not permanent wear. Take them off when your dog is crated, sleeping, or unsupervised. This prevents catching on objects and keeps the bandana in good condition longer.

Puppy sizing

Puppies grow fast. If your puppy is still growing, measure monthly and pick bandanas with wider neck ranges. The elastic band system is forgiving — a bandana that fits a 14"-16" neck will work as your puppy grows through that range.

Between sizes?

If your measurement falls on the boundary between two sizes, size up. A slightly roomy bandana looks better and is more comfortable than one that is too snug. The sewn-in elastic keeps it in place regardless.
