How to get it: Ask the owner directly. Most dog people know their dog's neck size or collar size. If you want to keep the gift a surprise, check the dog's collar — the size is usually printed on the inside. You can also ask to “pet the dog” and discreetly check.

If you can't get the measurement: Most medium dogs (21-50 lbs) fall in the 14-18 inch range. But the exact fit matters for a handmade piece — an approximation works, an exact measurement works better.
